Guitar Repairs - Guitar Tech set ups and repair cost

Guitar Tech Sammy Bones
I also get asked all the time if I can explain how to be a guitar tech. Well, one thing that you must have to be a good guitar tech are the proper guitar repair tools. This page shows some of the things that are in my workbox on tour.

I really love the Planet Waves Mini Headstock Tuner as well as the micro mini headstock tuner.. Planet Waves NS Mini Headstock Guitar TunerI keep one on me pretty much all the time. The Regular Planet Waves Heastock guitar tuner is also great. I love being able to quietly touch up tuning as I am walking toward the stage or waiting for stage power, etc. Plus, if you get several of them, they hold securely on the headstock and you can just leave them there when you put the guitar in the case or gig bag. The new micro headstock tuners, have a display that you can flip the orientation with the push of a button. This allows the tuner to be mounted in any position with not having the display facing the wrong way.

The Peterson 490 strobe tuner is my main tuner. I have a small headphone amp that I keep in line to check the guitar before I take it out on stage. There is a peterson that comes with a built in headphone amp, but I cant see spending $200 extra when you can get the same thing in a smaller package. My dream tuner is the Pertson 5000 II 12 note display tuner, and at more than $3,000.00 it is going to stay a dream. I just cant take that kind of money away from my family when the 490 works fine.

I always have at least 2 tuners in line together to make sure that one of them is not accidently on a wrong setting or something. The second tuner is either a Boss TU-2/TU-3 or a Planet Waves Pedal Tuner. The Planet Waves Chromatic Pedal Tuners are made of metal and heavy duty. You can feel the durability as soon as you pick one up. Plus they are accurate and reliable. I do recommend giving them a try. With all the other great guitar accessories that Planet Waves has, you know the pedal tuners are going to rock as well.
The Peterson 490 strobe tuner is my main tuner but I still have the planet waves tuner in-line for quick spot tuning. I have a small headphone amp that I keep in line to check the guitar before I take it out on stage.
I also have a Peterson 590 that is the same as a 490, but it comes with a built in headphone amp, but the guitar tone is an overdrive tone and I like to have a clean sound when listening to a guitar being tuned. especially when tuning acopustic guitars.
My dream tuner is the Peterson 5000 II 12 note display tuner, and at more than $3,000.00 it is going to stay a dream for a little while. I just cant take that kind of money away from my family when both the 490 and 590 work fine.
Nothing says that you know how to be a guitar tech like having a dremel in your workbox. I dont take these tools on fly dates, but for everyday touring, they are a must have for the guitar roadie. Oh, and don't forget the files and headphone amp to verify your tuning by ear.
For fly dates or one off dates. I like either one of these compact tool sets. Plus I add in some accessories like an extra string winder and a nice lithium flashlight.

In addition to my more than 20 years of touring guitar tech experience, I also repair guitars in my shop in Hendersonville TN just outside of Nashville Tennessee.
You can email or call if you need a guitar set up, or repair.
